OWN IT helps whānau like you buy their first home, right here in Tāmaki.

Owning your own home can change your life. It gives your whānau stability, and it can be the start of a better future for generations to come. Buying a home is not always an easy thing to do, especially if you earn a low or middle income in Auckland. But help is here for you. As part of the Tāmaki regeneration programme, 1,500 new homes are being built especially for whānau with a connection to Tāmaki. OWN IT has been set up to help you to buy one.

"I'm really proud that I was able to save and buy a home for my kids."

Mārena bought her own home in Glen Innes this year through OWN IT. She says doing the OWN IT Workshops gave her confidence. “I felt like the OWN IT team was setting me up for success from the start.” She’s keen to pass the financial skills she’s learnt on her OWN IT journey down to her four tamariki. “I want to show them that owning a home is possible for them, too.”

Step 1.

The first step is to come along to a free info session or contact one of our team.

You’ll find out:

  • The best way to get ready to buy your own home in Tāmaki, depending on your situation
  • How to apply to get started on your OWN IT journey

Step 2.

For everyone in Tāmaki - no matter what your household income is.

  • Get yourself ready to apply for a mortgage
  • Learn about financial help available to buy your home
  • Get the skills to build a financial plan for your whānau (pay off debt and save for a deposit)

Step 3.

There are two paths to buying an OWN IT home:

For Tāmaki whānau with a household income of around $85,000-$130,000
You can share the ownership of an OWN IT home with us at first. This makes your loan payments lower so they’re easier to afford. We’ll also share any increase in the value of the house with you. As time goes on, you can buy our share until eventually you own the whole house.

For Tāmaki whānau with a household income of up to $85,000
You can move into an OWN IT home and pay affordable rent until you’re ready to buy the house. This will give you more time to pay off debt and save for a deposit. We’ll also share any increase in the value of the house with you. When you’re ready, you can buy your home by sharing the ownership with us at first.

Whatever path you take, our friendly team will work with you at every step of the way, including signing you up, matching you with the right home, and helping you to apply for a mortgage.

Step 4.

You eventually become the sole owner of your OWN IT home when you’re ready to buy our share.

Don’t worry if some of this seems a bit complicated. If you’re a Tāmaki local, we can help you get ready to buy a home. Just get in touch with us today and we’ll show you how it all works.

"It feels awesome to own this home and plan for our future alongside this amazing community."

Toko and Rose bought their home in Glen Innes last year with the help of OWN IT. Toko says when he first heard about OWN IT, he was a bit skeptical. “It seemed too good to be true. But we soon discovered it really was possible to own a home here, with some hard work and patience.” Rose’s advice to other Tāmaki whānau who might be thinking about working with the OWN IT team is simple. “Just do it. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

It’s normal for people to start their OWN IT journey with debt or no savings. But with hard work and lots of support, most people who work with our team pay off their debt and get ready to buy their own home.

You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to get started. Get in touch with the team.
